DECATUR, Ga. - The Agnes Scott College softball team continued to show improvement, as they split two games with NAIA Brenau University (14-4), who had previously swept the Scotties (5-11) in their season opener. The Scotties used stellar performances from pitcher Holly Jones, who pitched a 4-hitter and registered 11 strikeouts in Game 1 to lead to the 6-1 victory for the Scotties.
"A win versus Brenau is a great accomplishment for us," beamed head coach Talya DiGirolamo. "Holly Jones really mixed up her pitches well and kept their batters off-balance."
At the plate, the Scotties were led by Alex Garcia, who 3-for-4 with 2RBIs, as well as Kat Riale, who was a perfect 3-for-3 in the leadoff spot, and Casey Arnold, who belted a 3-run double in the third inning to break open a close game and give the Scotties a 5 run advantage.
In Game 2, the Scotties held the lead for 6 innings, before the Tigers would plate three runs in the top of the sixth to lead to the eventual 4-2 final score. Arnold suffered the loss on the mound, pitching 6 solid innings, with 5 stirkeouts, and only 3 earned runs. Offensively, Arnold helped herself with another double, which led to 2 RBIs in the first inning. Riale was the only Scottie who managed multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-4. She is second on the team for the season with a .352 batting average. Aimee Jennings leads the Scotties at .356.
"I see the confidence building on this team," continued Coach DiGirolamo, "and I am excited to see where the second half of the season takes us."
The Scotties have little time to rest, as they hit the road today to take on USA South member Huntingdon College, at 1:00 and 3:00 CST.
