Scotties Drop Two to LaGrange

Scotties Drop Two to LaGrange

DECATUR, Ga. - The Agnes Scott College softball team wrapped up non-conference play with a doubleheader against LaGrange (15-22) today at home at Oakhurst Park.  Despite strong performances on the mound by Molly Baker in Game 1, and a big second inning offensively in Game 2, the Scotties fell, 2-0 and 11-6.

In Game 1, defense was the name of the game, as both teams struggled offensively against strong pitching.  Baker pitched a complete game for the Scotties, going 8 innings and scattering 5 hits.  The Panthers did not get on the board until extra innings.  However, a strong outing by Dani Gravett of the Panthers kept the Scotties (7-27) at bay, as she allowed only 3 hits over 8 innings of work for the win.

In Game 2, LaGrange's Sydney Hodorff belted a grand slam in the first inning to give the Panthers the early advantage, but Agnes Scott would answer with a 6-run second inning.  Jordyn Portis cracked a two-run home run, bringing home Kristin Root.  Root would finish the scoring later in the inning, as she belted a 2-run single to center field with the bases loaded, allowing DeAnna Fulton and Nicole Gilkeson to score to give the Scotties a 6-4 lead.

Errors would cost the Scotties dearly as reliever Nicole Gilkeson would go 7.0 innings and allow only two earned runs, but 6 errors by the home team led to 6 unearned runs over the final five innings, as the Panthers clawed back to win the game, 11-6.

The Scotties will await word from the conference office about their start time for the upcoming Great South Athletic Conference tournament, where they are expected to be the #3 seed and take on #2 Wesleyan College (Ga.).  The two teams faced off on Sunday, splitting the two contests.
