LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Agnes Scott softball fell to 0-10 on the season, and 0-4 in the USA South Athletic Conference, with a doubleheader loss to Covenant College (12-6, 6-2 USA South), dropping Game 1 by a score of 9-2, and jumping to an early 4-0 lead in Game 2, before the Scots exploded for 10 runs in the third inning, as they closed out the sweep in 5 innings, 14-6.
In Game 1, pitcher Nicole Gilkeson helped her own cause in the 3rd inning, as she belted a two-run homer to level the score at 2-2 in the top of the third inning. Covenant would strike back in the bottom of the inning, however, and tack on 7 runs throughout the following 4 innings, to outslug the Scotties, who laced 9 hits in the game, a season-high. Entering the game, the Scotties had scored only one run through 8 games played.
Game 2 saw even more offense from the Scotties, as they opened the game with a 4-run top of the 1st inning. They would hold that lead until the bottom of the second, when Covenant tied things up with 4 runs of their own. After a scoreless turn for the Scotties in the 3rd, the Scots poured on the runs in the bottom of the inning, plating 10 runners to put the game out of reach. Tatiana Santiago had a 3-run double in the top of the first for the Scotties, and Gilkeson added her 3rd RBI of the day in the 5th, as she scored Jessica Costero on a double to right field.
The Scotties will continue their busy spring break schedule, as they travel to Piedmont on Wednesday for a USA South doubleheader.
