Scotties Drop Four Over Weekend

Scotties Drop Four Over Weekend

DECATUR, Ga. - Agnes Scott softball finally got a chance to play at home this weekend, after taking their first 14 games on the road, but were unable to pick up their first win as they dropped doubleheaders to Ferrum and Mary Baldwin on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

In the series against Ferrum (7-8, 6-4 USA South), the Scotties were shutout in consecutive games, 10-0, and 7-0. In Game 1, Ferrum's Courtney Rudd pitched a perfect game, as Agnes Scott failed to reach base in the game on a no-hitter by Rudd, which included striking out 9 of the 15 batters she faced. Game 2 saw the Scotties (0-18, 0-12 USA South) manage five hits, but they were still unable to score, as the Panthers took the 7-0 decision.

In Sunday's contests against Mary Baldwin (4-10, 3-7 USA South), the Scotties once again struggled offensively in Game 1, as Mary Baldwin's Heather Mayes pitched a 5-inning one-hitter to keep the Scotties off the scoreboard. Alexei Young's single in the third inning was the spoiler for Mayes' no-hitter bid. In Game 2, however, the Scotties got on the board first, as Katie Bender homered for the first time in her collegiate career, scoring Haley Keesler in the bottom of the third to give the Scotties a 2-0 lead.  They would hold on to their lead until the top of the 6th, when Mary Baldwin would even the score off of two RBI singles, and follow that up with three more runs in the top of the 7th.

On the mound, Nicole Gilkeson took the loss in Game 2, after pitching 5 scoreless innings and striking out three, as Mary Baldwin picked up 6 hits in the 6th and 7th innings and tagged Gilkeson for 5 earned runs. Young picked up another hit to go 2-for-3 on the day.

The Scotties will return to action on Tuesday, March 21, in non-conference action, as they host Centre at 4:00 and 6:00 at Oakhurst Park.
