FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.—First-year Caitlin Weaver (Jacksonville, Fla.) was named the USA South Rookie of the Week after an outstanding all-around week that led to two wins for the Agnes Scott Scotties. Weaver made two starts in the circle, earning one winning decision, while also serving as the Scotties' best hitter for the week with eight hits in four games.
Weaver took the ball in the first game of each series against Wesleyan and Sewanee, going 1-0 with a complete-game triumph against the Tigers in the third contest of the weekend. The rookie pitcher and outfield helped the Scotties snap a 36-game losing streak dating back to the 2016 season by going the distance while only allowing one earned run on six hits scattered.
While her tactical style in the circle was impressive it was the consistency with that bat that earned Weaver Rookie of the Week honors. She took the team lead with eight hits, including an impressive 4-for-4 showing in game two of a sweep against Sewanee on Friday night under the Oakhurst Park lights. Weaver is tied with sophomore Alexei Young for the team lead in extra-base hits with three—two doubles and one triple—and leads the conference in batting average amongst players with more than two games played.
She becomes the first player from the program to earn a USA South honor.
The Scotties (2-2) have a solid week of action ahead of them with a trip to West Division favorite Piedmont on Thursday before returning home to take on Ferrum on Saturday at noon.
