DECATUR, Ga.—Oglethorpe showed why they were a preseason favorite in the SAA on Tuesday night, handing Agnes Scott a 70-28 defeat to spoil the home opener for the Scotties. Agnes Scott drops its third consecutive game after a win in its season opener, while Oglethorpe handled its second USA South team to start the season at 2-0.
The Stormy Petrels led from beginning to end and pressured the Scotties in the full court from the very start. Oglethorpe scored the first seven points of the game and never looked back on their way to a 21-5 lead after the first quarter. The second quarter didn't provide much more favorable results for the home side as the pressure continued to generate turnovers for transition buckets for the Stormy Petrels. Oglethorpe extended its lead to 47-11 at halftime.
The Scotties had a tough night from the floor due to Oglethorpe's length forcing tough shots, especially in the backcourt. The Scotties made eight shots from the floor, while Oglethorpe finished with 22 makes from the field.
Garis Grant (Charleston, S.C.) finished a point short of her third double-double of the season with nine points, 13 boards, and a game-high six blocks. Kamiyla Lane (Atlanta, Ga.) had eight points off the bench.
Oglethorpe was led by Savannah LeGate (Nashville, Tenn.) with 12 and Bailey Charles (Ellijay, Ga.) with 10. The Stormy Petrels also outrebounded the Scotties to the tune of 54-41, the first time the Scotties were had on the glass in 2017.
Agnes Scott will have the Thanksgiving break to recover before hitting the same floor against Johnson & Wales (N.C.) on Sunday at 4 p.m.
