Scotties Garner Fourth-Place Nod in West Division

Scotties Garner Fourth-Place Nod in West Division

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.—The Agnes Scott Women's Soccer program was slotted fourth in the USA South West Division as a part of the conference's annual preseason polling voted on by the league's coaches. The Scotties bumped up a spot from where they finished following the 2016 season after the restructuring the of the conference's divisions.

This is the first season that the Conference will once again split into divisions in the sport of women's soccer as the Conference welcomes new League members Berea College, Brevard College and Pfeiffer University. Brevard and Pfeiffer will not be included in the polls as they are each reclassifying from Division II and are not eligible championship honors this season.

Placing first in the USA South West Division poll was defending USA South Tournament Champions, Piedmont College, led by first-year head coach Timmy McCormack. The Lions captured their second consecutive League tournament crown and finished the season in the NCAA Tournament with a 10-3-1 overall record. Piedmont received 48 total points and six first place votes. Placing second in the poll with 41 points and one first place vote was Maryville College while Covenant College was third with 39 points and the final remaining first place vote. Agnes Scott ranked fifth with 28 points followed closely by Huntingdon College in sixth with 27 points. Rounding out the poll were LaGrange College (18 points), Berea (12 points) and Wesleyan College (11 points).

The Scotties will be a bit of a mystery to the rest of the conference despite returning a majority of its 2016 starting unit as the team underwent a coaching makeover. First-year head coach Eric Struble enters after a two-year post as an assistant at Smith College in Northampton, Mass. and will immediately look to put his stamp on the program. Sophomore Nia Coates was one of two Scotties to make an All-Division team in the conference last season after scoring five goals in her rookie season and returns atop the Scottie offense.

Agnes Scott will open their bid at another successful campaign when they travel to Oglethorpe on September 1 for a 7 p.m. start.
