Hoffman Narrowly Misses Upset Bid, Scotties Fall 9-0 to #14 Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Agnes Scott College tennis team traveled north to face another Top-15 program, and fell to the #14 Sewanee by a score of 9-0.  The Scotties (1-4) fell for the second time this season to a Top 15 team, having previously fallen to #2 Emory University earlier in the season.

First-year Maddie Hoffman had the match of the day for the Scotties, taking the first set off of Christina Merchant of the Tigers, who now stand at 5-2 on the season.  In the end, though, Merchant was able to hold off Hoffman, winning 2-6, 6-3, 1-0(11-9).  Also giving a strong performance for the Scotties was First-year Camille Wilson, who rallied in the second set from 5-1 down to bring the second set to 5-3 and lead 40-15 before ultimately falling, 6-1, 6-3, to Mariah Smith at the #6 spot.

"Overall, we played some decent tennis," commented head coach T.J. Greggs.  "We are still making some careless mistakes on important points, and that shows in the score.  We must have had 20 game points that we gave away with errors today, so we need to improve in closing out games when we have the opportunity, especially against a team as talented as Sewanee."

The Scotties will now take a break from competition until March 25, when they host Point University.
