DECATUR, Ga. - In their season debut, the Agnes Scott College tennis team made it a memorable one as they fought hard in a 4 1/2 hour match against Point University, eventually claiming a 5-4 win over the Skyhawks (1-3). Junior Maddie Hoffman was the deciding point, as she fought off cramping to take out Katie Larck at the top spot, winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
In the doubles, the top two positions were back and forth affairs, as both contests remained close throughout. At the No. 3 spot, Agnes Scott's first-time pairing of Camille Wilson and first-year Lizzy Engsberg proved to be a strong combination, as they raced through their match without dropping a game, dropping the duo of Martina Belloni and Victoria White, 8-0. At the No. 2 spot, Anastasia Bennett and Olivia Rivas fought back from a 3-game deficit twice, but eventually fell short, 8-6. At the top spot, Hoffman and Taylor Lee fought to 6-6 before falling to Larck and Luz Padilla, 8-6, putting the Scotties in a 2-1 hole entering the singles.
In singles, Wilson continued her strong day, as she blasted past White, winning 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot. Point University would answer back to go up 3-2, as Belloni took out Rivas in straight sets at No. 4. Bennett got things back on track for the Scotties as she rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the first set and won 11 of the next 12 games to run away from Eman Cohen, 7-5, 6-1. Engsberg picked up her second win of the day, as she took the first set from Taylor Navarro at the No. 3 spot, and led 2-1 in the second before Navarro retired with an injury.
With the Scotties needing one more win to secure the victory, Point had a rally of their own, as Padilla came back from a 4-1 deficit against Lee at the No. 2 spot, winning 6-3, 6-4, and Larck took Hoffman into a third set on Court 1. Hoffman changed her strategy in the third set, going on the offensive, and it paid off as she rattled off the final four games of the match and gave the Scotties the win.
The Scotties (1-0) will hope to continue their strong start on Wednesday, February 15, as they travel to NCAA Division II Albany State for a 4:00 p.m. match on the ASU West Campus.
