Wilson and Engsberg Claim USA South Honors

FULL RELEASE

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Agnes Scott College swept the USA South's first weekly awards for the week of February 6-12, 2017, as Camille Wilson was named the Player of the Week after picking up two wins in the Scotties' 5-4 win over Point University on February 10, and her doubles partner, Lizzy Engsberg, took home Rookie of the Week honors after also posting two wins during the season-opening win over Point.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Camille Wilson, Agnes Scott - The junior from Cincinnati, Ohio earned victories at both the number-six singles and number-three doubles positions last week in the team's only match. The victories came over opponents from Point University as she teamed with Lizzy Engsberg for the doubles win. Also Nominated: None.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Drew Vanderbrook, LaGrange - The senior forward from Clearwater, Florida notched a double-double of 28 points and 11 rebounds in a 91-72 victory over Greensboro in the team's only contest last week. He also added two assists without a turnover and one block in the win. Also Nominated: Z Arima, Covenant; Joshua Brooks, Maryville; James Contreras Jr., Averett; Trae Gaines, Piedmont; Lorenzo Marry, Greensboro; Adrian Moore, N.C. Wesleyan.

Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Caleb Haynes, Covenant - The Section, Alabama freshman forward averaged 15.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game in a 2-0 week versus USA South competition for the Scots. In an 81-80 win over Huntingdon, Haynes totaled 13 points and four rebounds. In a 67-63 victory over Averett, Haynes scored a career-high 17 points with nine rebounds and one assist. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Juliette Harp, Huntingdon - The Chattanooga, Tennessee junior forward averaged a double-double of 16.7 points and 14.3 rebounds per game in a 2-1 week versus USA South competition for the Hawks. She also added 3.3 blocks and 1.3 steals per contest while notching a double-double in each game. In a 76-55 loss to LaGrange, Harp totaled 16 points, 13 rebounds, three blocks and one steal. In a 66-45 win over Agnes Scott, Harp tallied 17 points, 13 rebounds, three blocks, two steals and one assist. Finally, in a 73-59 victory over Wesleyan, Harp contributed 17 points, 17 rebounds, four blocks and one steal. Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Katie Lewis, Greensboro The Pleasant Garden, North Carolina freshman guard averaged 11.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 1.7 assists per game in an 2-1 week for the Pride. In a 65-53 win over Mid-Atlantic Christian, Lewis tallied six points and three rebounds. In a 62-59 loss to USA South rival N.C. Wesleyan, Lewis totaled 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Finally, in an 88-51 victory over USA South foe Methodist, Lewis contributed 17 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. BASEBALL

Baseball Player of the Week
Corey Bell, LaGrange - The senior infielder from Port Orange, Florida went a combined 12-for-18 (.667) with a .700 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage to go along with six runs scored, seven RBI, three doubles, one home run, two walks and three stolen bases as the Panthers notched a 4-0 week with wins over Berry, Rhodes, Southwestern and Oglethorpe. In the victories over Rhodes and Southwestern, Bell was a combined 8-for-9 with four runs scored, two RBI and one home run. Also Nominated: Andrew Burden, Piedmont; Hunter Curtis, Greensboro; A.J. Hart, Averett; Trenton Nobles, Covenant; Bryce Redaja, Maryville.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Seth George, Piedmont - The junior from Candler, North Carolina earned two victories, both in relief, in two appearances on the mound last week. He tossed a total of 4.2 scoreless innings allowing one hit, one walk and four strikeouts. In a 7-6 win over Christopher Newport, George tossed the final 1.2 innings as the Lions came from behind to earn the win. In a 4-3 victory over sixth-ranked Birmingham Southern, George tossed three hitless innings as Piedmont once again rallied for the win. Baseball Rookie of the Week
Hunter Curtis, Greensboro - The freshman shortstop from Graham, North Carolina went 4-for-8 (.500) with a .500 on-base percentage and a .500 slugging percentage to go along with one run scored and five RBI as the Pride swept a doubleheader from Southern Virginia last week. In game two, Curtis was 3-for-4 with five RBI. Also Nominated: Derek Hurt, Maryville; Sawyer Smith, Averett; Wes Snyder, Piedmont.

Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Zach Kyzer, Covenant - The freshman from Acworth, Georgia picked up his first collegiate win by throwing five scoreless innings in a 6-1 victory over Emory & Henry in his only appearance on the mound for the Scots last week. Kyzer allowed just three hits and three walks with five strikeouts. Also Nominated: Anthony Rodriguez, Maryville; Tyler Garam, Greensboro.

 

SOFTBALL

Softball Player of the Week
Jessica Long, Averett - The senior infielder from Prospect Hill, North Carolina went a combined 9-for-15 (.600) with a .625 on-base percentage and a .933 slugging percentage to go along with eight runs scored, four RBI, three doubles, one triple, one walk and one stolen base as the Cougars earned a 3-1 record last week. In a two-game sweep of Rhodes, Long was a combined 7-for-9 with five runs scored, four RBI, three doubles, one triple and one stolen base. In a two-game split with fourth-ranked Emory, Long was a combined 2-for-6 with three runs scored and one walk. Softball Pitcher of the Week
Kaitlyn Aherron, Averett - The freshman from Alton, Virginia earned two complete-game victories in two appearances last week for the Cougars. Aherron tossed a total of 15.0 innings, posted a 5.13 ERA and struck out eight batters. In her collegiate debut, a 7-4 victory over fourth-ranked Emory, Aherron allowed four runs on ten hits with one walk. In a 10-9, eight-inning, victory over Rhodes, Aherron allowed seven earned runs on ten hits with four walks and eight strikeouts. Also Nominated: Melissa Eckman, Piedmont; Tyler Epes, Covenant.

Softball Rookie of the Week
Aly Snider, Maryville - The freshman utility player from Hampshire, Illinois went a combined 7-for-9 (.778) with an .800 on-base percentage and a 1.111 slugging percentage to go along with four runs scored, seven RBI, three doubles and one walk as the Scots posted a 3-1 record to begin the season. In a two-game sweep of Westminster, Snider was a combined 3-for-4 with three runs scored, six RBI and two doubles. In a two-game split with Rhodes, Snider was a combined 4-for-5 with one run scored, one run batted in, one double and one walk. Natalie Ritchey, Greensboro - The Hampstead, Maryland junior midfielder totaled eight points on two goals and six assists, including the eventual game-winning score, in an 8-6 victory over Berry to open the season. She also added two draw controls, one ground ball and one caused turnover. Also Nominated: Carlee Joseph, Meredith; Madison Ronelli, Methodist.

Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Devan Macheras, Greensboro - The Viera, Florida senior defender/midfielder tallied three groundballs, two draw controls and two caused turnovers to go along with one goal in an 8-6 victory over Berry to open the season. Also Nominated: Jenine Brideau, Piedmont; Haley Whitfield, Meredith.

Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Eva Tallent, LaGrange - The Lilburn, Georgia freshman midfielder tallied two goals in a 13-7 season-opening victory over Millsaps. Tallent also added three groundballs, three draw controls and two caused turnovers. Also Nominated: Rowan Bumpass, Piedmont; Haley Whitfield, Meredith.
