DEMOREST, Ga. - Agnes Scott tennis picked up their first USA South Athletic Conference win today with a 7-2 win over Piedmont (5-7, 2-1 USA South), handing the Lions their first loss in conference play. For the Scotties (5-5, 1-2 USA South), Maddie Hoffman, Camille Wilson and Anastasia Bennett all won twice on the day.
In the doubles, all three courts were tight affairs, but the Scotties managed to take two doubles matches, winning at No. 2 and No. 3. Hoffman and Wilson paired up at the No. 2 match, and in a back-and-forth affair against Durden Smith and Karina Rivera, the Scotties duo came back from a 7-6 deficit to take the match, 9-7. At the No. 3 spot Bennett and Olivia Rivas fought back from a 6-5 hole to close out the match at love in the final game, winning 8-6. At the top spot, Taylor Lee and Lizzy Engsberg dropped an 8-6 decision to Morgan Buchholz and Amanda Blackwell.
In singles, the Scotties got quick wins from Hoffman, Wilson and Bennett to put the match out of reach and build a 5-1 lead. Hoffman took out Buchholz in straight sets at the No. 1 spot, Bennett picked up her first conference win with a 6-3, 6-0 drubbing of Smith at No. 4, and Wilson eased past Valeryia Zhurakovskaya at No. 6, winning 6-1, 6-1 to seal the match for the visitors.
Shortly after the Scotties sealed the overall match, Engsberg remained undefeated in conference singles play, taking down Blackwell, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2, and Lee finished off the scoring, picking up her first conference win of the season with a dramatic 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (11) win over Simona Floyd at the No. 3 spot. Rivera picked up the only singles win for Piedmont, downing Rivas 7-6(4), 6-4 at No. 5.
The Scotties will return to conference play on Saturday, April 1, as they host LaGrange.
