MACON, Ga. - Anna Tomkins served up 18 aces to rank #5 in NCAA Division III history, as Agnes Scott College solidified their place at the top of the Great South Athletic Conference with a 25-4, 25-6, 25-11 win over Wesleyan (0-13, 0-2 GSAC). With the win, the Scotties (6-4, 2-0 GSAC) remain in first place in the conference standings.
Tomkins and the rest of the Scotties kicked off the game in style, reeling off the first 18 points of the match, including 7 of Tomkins' record-setting total for aces. From there on, the Scotties would roll past the Wolves. Paige Heck registered 7 kills for the Scotties to lead them offensively. In total, the Scotties would serve 23 aces for the contest.
"Anna did a great job tonight of finding her spots with her serve," commented head coach Catherine Geerlings. "Everyone contributed to the win tonight, and we are hitting our stride at the right time."
The Scotties hit an incredible .422 for the match, lodging 24 kills on 45 attempts. Seniors Shakirah Dodson and Briana Vannoy each registered 3 kills in the win. Tomkins' 18 aces are the most in all of NCAA Division III this season for a 3-set match, with the next closest performance being 13.
Agnes Scott will look to win their fourth straight when they face off with Oglethorpe at 4:30 p.m. at home on September 30, followed with a match against nationally-ranked Emory at 8:30 p.m. the same evening. The Stormy Petrels and Eagles will face off at 6:30 p.m. in the tri-match scheduled for Woodruff Gymnasium. Live video for all three matches will be available.
