WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Agnes Scott College volleyball team traveled to North Carolina this weekend for matches against Salem College and Guilford College, with the team splitting the matches by identical 3-0 scores. In the critical Great South Athletic Conference matchup with the Spirits (3-13, 1-2 GSAC), the Scotties were able to clinch the GSAC regular season title, by way of a 25-23, 25-19, 25-19 win. The win leaves the Scotties at a perfect 3-0 in the conference with one regular season match remaining against Wesleyan on Friday.
In the second contest on Sunday, the Scotties were within reach of the first two sets against the Quakers (6-16) of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, but each time, a run by the Quakers would take the momentum from the Scotties, leading to back-to-back 25-23 setbacks. The third set was all Quakers, as they raced to the sweep, 25-14.
The Scotties (9-13, 3-0 GSAC) were led over the weekend by first-year outside hitter Paige Heck, who finished with 25 kills for the weekend, including 18 against Salem. Setter Anna Tomkins continued her stellar sophomore season with 52 assists, 9 kills, 4 service aces and 14 digs. Bonnie Derks had 17 kills and 16 digs for the weekend, and Bella Kammerer had 15 and 14 digs, respectively, giving her four straight contests with double-digits in the defensive category.
"I am very happy that we were able to clinch the GSAC regular season title this weekend," commented head coach Catherine Geerlings, "but we didn't perform our best on Sunday against Guilford, so it's a mixed reaction to the weekend."
The Scotties will return to action on Wednesday, October 28, as they face off with Huntingdon College of the USA South. Game time is 7:00 p.m. and live stats and video will be made available on the Agnes Scott College website.
