Scotties Drop Two Five-Setters at Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.—Agnes Scott Volleyball had its two-match win streak snapped with a pair of grueling five-set losses at Salem College on Saturday. Dual comebacks by Salem College and Johnson & Wales (N.C.) put the Scotties on the wrong side of the scoreboard in back-to-back matches. Agnes Scott falls to 3-6 on the year.

The Scotties will look to recover on Tuesday when they get a chance at revenge at Toccoa Falls at 7 p.m.

Match 1 vs. Salem: L 3-2 (23-25, 25-11, 25-23, 19-25, 13-15)

The Scotties and Spirits were nearly identical across the board on the stat sheet, but it was the Spirits who tracked down the points in crunch time to take a close match.

A back and forth first set never quite had much momentum in either team's favor. The Scotties led at the halfway point of the game, but a four-point run by the home side allowed them to take a 15-12 lead they would never completely relinquish. The Scotties got as close as one point in the waning moments at 22-21, but the Spirits finished off the first set with a 3-1 run to take a match lead.

Things were much different in the second as the Scotties left little doubt from beginning to end. Before anyone could blink, Agnes Scott held a 10-1 advantage as both offenses headed in different directions. Salem hit in the negatives, while the Scotties posted a .214 hitting mark to easily even the match 25-11.

The ASC momentum continued well into the third set as the Scotties raced out to an 8-1 lead. However, the Spirits fought back in the third to make things interesting. Agnes had a comfortable cushion at 23-17, but a five-point run made it close again. The Scotties were able to stay composed and finish off the set 25-23 for the overall 2-1 lead.

A strong service game turned the tables in the fourth set. Agnes Scott was able to stay a few points ahead of the Spirits for much of the fourth, including a 15-13 advantage with a win in their sights. However, an 8-0 run by Salem in which aced the Scotties five times changed the tone of the match. Salem ultimately went on to win 25-19 to force a deadlock needing to be broken in the fifth.

The Scotties were able to gain the early lead in the finale with a 5-1 edge, but Salem eventually caught them by the midway point. Both teams matched each other point for point for the next stretch, but it was Agnes Scott who was two points away from a win at 13-12. Three consecutive kills, two coming from Taylor Moulton, was enough to complete the comeback for the Spirits in five sets.
