MARYVILLE, Tenn.—For the second time in as many meeting, Agnes Scott Volleyball dropped a 3-1 match to Maryville. The Scots had just enough to outlast the Scotties in first, second and fourth sets to secure a season sweep.
Each offense had its strongest play of the match in the opening set, but Maryville was just enough sharper to take a 25-20 game for the lead. The Scotties put up 13 kills to only four errors in the opener, but the Scots added three more on top of that with errors coming at a minimum.
The second set followed a similar path as the Scots took the early lead only for the Scotties to knot things up later in the set. The Scots were able to win three consecutive points after Agnes Scott had tied the score at 17 and stayed just out of reach for the two-set lead, 25-20.
Agnes Scott had its best run of the day in the third. Leading 11-9, Agnes rallied off six straight points to give themselves a hefty lead at the turn toward set victory. Maryville clawed its way back to within one at 23-22, but Agnes Scott was able to stave off the full rally with two more points won.
The Scotties looked poised to even the match scored with a later 20-18 lead over the Scots, but a 6-0 run by the home side did in their rally in a 25-21 final set.
Resa Knott (Atlanta, Ga.) was the top point-getter for the Scotties with 11 kills and a .476 hitting percentage. Anna Tomkins (Chapel Hill, N.C.) dished out 31 assists, while Bella Kammerer (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) picked up 20 digs.
The Scotties drop to 7-15 overall and 1-6 in the USA South. Agnes Scott heads to Piedmont on Tuesday for a chance at evening the series with the Lions.
