Back in action for the first time since 2008, the Agnes Scott Cross Country team competed in the Sewanee Invitational this morning in Tennessee.
Host University of the South won the women's meet followed by Birmingham Southern and Covenant College in second and third. Washington and Lee placed fourth, followed by Maryville College in fifth and Agnes Scott in sixth place. Oglethorpe University finished seventh. LaGrange College and Millsaps College also competed in the race but did not have enough runners to place.
Eight of Agnes Scott's 16 runners traveled to the race and for three of the runners it was their first cross country race ever. The team did a great job of running together and pushing each other on a challenging course.
Junior Giulia Ghezzi came in first for the Scotties and 50th overall in the 6km race with a time of 32:03. Sophomore Morgan Lucarelli crossed the line in 59th place with a time of 35:23. First-year Yang Hong was next for the Scotties in 61st place with a 36:18. First-year Katie Both came in 63rd with a 37:40 followed by junior Elisabeth Taylor in 65th with a 39:47. Sophomore Karmen Williams and junior Farida Abudulai rounded out the Agnes Scott runners finishing 69th and 70th with a time of 41:48.
"The team ran really well today. We have only been practicing for two weeks and this was our first race, while most of the teams ran their first race last weekend. To me this means we have a lot of potential" commented head coach Mary Chind. "We also weren't prepared for the heat which is my fault as the coach. We practice at 7 a.m. when it's not nearly as hot and humid as it was today at 10 a.m. Central time. Taking these things into consideration, plus the fact that we didn't have a team for the past few years, I know that we will see great improvements at our next race in two weeks and throughout the season."
The Scotties' next race will be at Ga Regents University in Augusta on September 20.
