ROME, Ga. - The Agnes Scott cross country team closed out their season over the weekend with a trip to the NCAA Division III Regional Meet hosted by Berry College in Rome, Ga. The Scotties finished in 29th place in their first year back as a program after a six year hiatus.
Emory University took first place with a team total of 62 points, followed by Christopher Newport's 124 team points. The top two teams automatically earn a bid to the NCAA DIII National Championship. Centre College missed a National bid by one point after finishing with 125 points, followed by Rhodes (137) and Mary Washington (142).
For Agnes Scott, junior Kelcie Evans paced the Scotties and dropped two minutes off of her previous 6k time with a personal best of 30:07. Sophomore Morgan Lucarelli was close behind with a 32:16, one minute faster than her previous 6k. Junior Elisabeth Taylor crossed the line third for Agnes Scott with a 32:52 and a 30 second improvement on her personal best. Junior Farida Abudulai dropped three minutes off her previous 6k and finished in 33:09. First-year Yang Hong rounded out the top five for Agnes Scott finishing in 35:58.
"I'm proud of the team for making such big improvements over the season," commented head coach Mary Chind. "Today's race was very competitive, I think the pace of the first mile took them off guard a little bit, but they adjusted well and finished the race without quitting."
The meet marks the end of the season for the Scotties. The team will begin their non-traditional season in March.
